Newbies Help Newsletter  -   Dated 31 July 2007  ♦  Issue # 731
The theme of today's newsletter is Finding Keywords

Hi [[firstname]],

Welcome to all the new members who joined our group during this last week.
One of the hardest tasks to get right is the one of finding keywords for your website, or your PPC ads, or even your blog. It is something most of us do poorly, and really there is no reason not to improve our results and profits by doing this job right

This week's contents:

  1. This week's article entitled "Search Engine Keyword Selection"
  2. The first tool I use for keyword research
  3. The second tool I use for keyword research
  4. Affiliate Classroom Magazine for July 2007
  5. This week's tip.

1. This week's article

If you have been trying to get traffic to your website or any other sales page that you have, then you will have worked with keywords in order to attract the visitors. It is one of the most important aspects of marketing on the Internet. Unfortunately, most marketers do not put the correct emphasis on finding the correct keywords/phrases for their particular product or service.

To ensure that visitors find their way to your sales page you must give them explicit directions as to how to get there. You do this by carefully selecting the appropriate keywords. When you find those exact keywords you will have a glut of traffic which is ready to check out what you have on offer.
If the keywords are too general, then many of the potential visitors will not even get to your site, and those that do are not really interested and profitability is severely reduced.

A very common mistake made in the choosing of keywords is that the marketer, knowing the product better than anyone else, decides that they are in a better position to know exactly which keywords are the best to use. They forget that it is the customer who is searching, not the marketer.

The best source of keywords comes from your potential customers, as these are the search terms they use. Ask your opt-in list, if you have one, and see what input can be obtained from them.
The best way is to start checking broad keywords related to your product or service and then dig down, and sideways through the layers of keywords. There are many free software systems related to Keywords that will help in this task. WordTracker is a subscription service that is extensively used for this work. Remember that you are tracking keywords based on what the potential customer has entered as a search term. Do not try to pre-empt their input.

If you are lucky enough to get your list to respond you may be surprised that the terms they search on are quite different from your own ideas. From this list, as well as a list of keywords/phrases you have narrowed down in your searches, the next step is to evaluate each keyword/phrase.

The evaluation process is very simple. It is to define which keywords/phrases will direct the highest number of quality visitors to your website. The quality referred to here is that the visitor will buy as opposed to just look around. In this process there are three criteria to evaluate:

  1. Obviously the more popular the keyword, the better chance you have that they will find your website. There is a negative side in that highly popular keywords will be difficult to register highly in the Search Engine results due to the high numbers of competitors in the market.
  2. The more specific your keyword relates to your product then its value to you increases tremendously. For example, someone searching for a “dog grooming brush” is quite specific in what they are looking for. The keyword “dog grooming” may not catch this high quality visitor. The other advantage with the more specific keyword is that there will probably be less competition to fight off.
  3. How motivated is the visitor to buy? Is the visitor searching specifically for an item or just browsing. In other words you are trying to target the person who knows what they want to buy and go looking for it, not the person who is looking to see if anything pops out at them.

You have now finalized the keywords/phrases, but the work has only just begun. It is very important to evaluate the performance of the keywords, and not just on one search engine, but all the major engines. Again, there is software available that will help to track your keywords and assess their effectiveness with respect to sales made. The actual number of visitors to your website is important but converting them into buyers or opt-ins is more important.

2. The first tool I use for keyword research

I bought this keyword tool this last week as I was greatly impressed by the videos demonstrating what it could actually do. It is called Micro Niche Finder. It is a superb tool that is set up on your PC for starting your keyword search in a broad term, then digging down and sideways to find good niche markets. It even can find relevant Clickbank Products for the keyword chosen as well as affiliate programs related to the word. I have set up one keyword and will now have to wait to track the results. You must take a look at this software before the price increases:

3. The second tool I use for keyword research

This one tool I have used for quite a while now and it is called Keyword Elite. This piece of software really surpasses anything else I have found in terms of keyword research and analysis. It even lets you get into your competitors' details and look at their incoming links. The product is well demonstrated with videos on the website and has served me very well. This is actually one of those products that achieves what they say it is supposed to do. I have come used Keyword Elite for the last 9 months and it has served me very well. Take a look at the site:

This week's tip.

Do you use viral marketing as one method to generate traffic. If you just throw together a report or ebook without ensuring that it is relevant to the market, and of the highest quality that you can achieve, then don't bother as there will be very little viral effect. The key to a good viral product is that the recipient finds it so interesting that he/she wants to share it with friends and colleagues. A tip is to prepare the document or software as if you were going to sell it, then in this way you will not be tempted to skimp on the work.

I hope that this week's issue was of interest to you, and maybe you found something that would be helpful in your own business. If so, I would appreciate any feedback you may have so that I can align future content to better suit your needs. Send them to [mailto:newsletter@newbieshelp.com]
